In collaboration with colleagues at the University of Arizona, University of New Mexico, and New Mexico State University, we are launching a broad-ranging transdisciplinary research, teaching, and public outreach initiative focused on the U.S.-Mexico borderlands. Our interests are at the intersection of nature, culture, history, and community. We plan to establish an on-going summer field seminar on the cultural/environmental history of the region and engage in community-based research and public programs aimed at understanding and reinforcing local and regional sense of place as a cultural anchor amid the rapid social and economic change occurring in the region.
