Much of the social justice discourse surrounding refugees focuses on violations that occur in lawless regions or under repressive regimes. However, refugees endure systemic oppression and violence both during their journeys and within the countries they seek to make their home. Human Rights/Human Rites illuminates how “democratic” policies put bodies at risk in the West/westernized world. Through interactive installations that provide participants with an embodied, affective, and sensorial understanding, along with accompanying statements that shed light on the refugee experience, this project challenges our understanding of what is legal, just, or humane, prompting reflection on our roles in state-sanctioned injustices.
