Storytelling on Location: Emerging Modalities of Place-Based Writing

This project aims to delineate a methodology for creating site-specific writing projects with mobile augmented reality technologies. Mobile augmented reality (AR) applications overlay digital media files — images, videos, 3D animations, etc. — onto the user’s live camera view of the physical world.

Mobile AR experiences have the potential to disrupt entrenched ideological borders and provide local communities with more effective avenues for civic deliberation and political action. Ultimately, this project demonstrates that by attending to the existing stories about a location, writers will be better equipped to employ AR technologies as platforms for public writing and catalysts for social change.
