Since 2005, the Humanities Institute has served as a research accelerator, providing ASU humanities units, centers and faculty with the resources needed to become leaders in the national and international research community. The institute provides these resources to over four hundred faculty, 12 centers and all humanities units on all university campuses as well as humanities faculty in other units across all ASU campuses.

The first ten years of the Institute for Humanities Research were ably guided by its founding director, Sally Kitch, who laid its foundations. In 2016 Cora Fox became interim director of the IHR where she adeptly fostered the programming and funding program goals and worked closely with ASU humanities units. Elizabeth Langland became director of the IHR in 2018 and led the Institute in developing new strategic goals and initiatives. In 2021 Nicole Anderson brought a robust research focus and international perspective as director. In 2023, Ron Broglio took up the directorship maintaining the Institute’s rich history of intellectually capacious and connected humanities communities.
