Our Mission
The Humanities Institute (HI) supports research and creative engagement with what it means to be human in a constantly changing world. The HI connects university and partner communities in celebrating the best of what the Humanities can accomplish across cultures, time and space.
Inspire Engagement
Stay curious. Our cultures are rich in textured histories, current endeavors, and future possibilities. The Institute fosters academic and public programming that keeps us asking questions and developing our understanding of the past and present to imagine greater futures. And we celebrate the achievements of humanities scholars in our book award and distinguished lecture events. See our Programs, Book Award, and Distinguished Lecture.
Support Research
Care for the possible. Our academic work ensures the pasts are not forgotten but brought into the present. Such understanding helps us to build informed and creative futures. Our seed grant program helps our research faculty bring their ideas to life and apply for external funding to advance their projects. The Fellows program allows faculty time to research and write and discuss their ideas in conversation with others. Subventions help faculty publish their work. Clusters allow faculty with common interests to develop their research community. See our grants, fellowships and subventions.
Foster Community
Connect capaciously. The Institute serves as a hub for bringing people and ideas together in diverse and inclusive communities. Within and beyond the university we promote public humanities and cross-disciplinary conversations and partnerships.
